             •  The course demands a high level of participation and response from  trainees and places

                  emphasis  on the practical application of Tugs & Boats handling techniques to maneuver

                  Tugs & Boats safely  and with precision.


             •  Theory is covered during classroom lectures.


             •  Practical Tugs & Boats handling simulation exercises are conducted and followed by a

                  thorough  debriefing and analysis of each exercise.

Course Objectives:

  The main objective of the course is to ensure that trainees who successfully complete the course will have a comprehensive understanding of how to effectively maintain control of  Tugs & Boats when maneuvering to avoid other vessels, maneuvering in confined waters, and in emergencies.


       Participants will learn how to:

              1. Develop skills to handle different types of tugs.

              2. Provide experience of handling highly maneuverable tugs and enhancing awareness about

                      the effects of: fenders “towline - propeller wash interaction” radio Communication -

                     Controllable / uncontrollable forces and varying visibility.

             3. Efficiently implement new tug designs, additional or new assisted ship designs or new

                     operating areas.

             4. Develop skills to handle and utilize the best practice in different types of boats at various


             5. Grow up the participants’ knowledge about towing operation and towing limitations.

            • Review of basic principles.

            • Factors involved in Tugs & Boats handling.

            • Type of boats and tugs (Single Screw and Twin Screw, V.S., AZ, Conventional).

            • Tug capabilities and limitations.

            • Escort tugs Technique.

            • Tug safety and interaction effects.

            • Boat safety and interaction between ships.

            • Pivot point and forces effects.

            • Towing equipment and limitations.

            • Standard maneuvers.


            • Different manoeuvres tug boat.

            • Wind and current effects.

            • Emergency procedures.

            • Communication skills.

            • Combating oil spills.

            • Seamanship techniques and boat skipper best practice.

            • Practical exercises.

            • Thorough debriefing and analysis.
